Those of you that are close to me know that I have a slight obsession with the State Fair of Texas. From the lights to the crisp weather, nothing better signifies the end of another unbearable summer here in North Texas. When I think of fairs in general, movies like 'The Notebook' and 'Grease' come to mind. Fairs have a nostalgia and romance of being carefree.
With that being said it makes the perfect background for my first photo shoot for this blog. I had asked my friend and fellow hair stylist, Ashley Jane Regan, if she would be down to be my model as she has the best hair for this romantic 's' wave that I thought would be perfect for this theme. Luckily, she was down with some fried food and some great head shots.
I also had some help from ol' trusty Dusty lugging around our things and helping find the BEST and ...sadly the biggest letdowns of 2016 fair food. I know. How can fried go bad? Well in many ways apparently. But let's start at the top with the Best Fair Foods... that we encountered in our 2 hour venture to the fair on opening day.
So I think it was unanimous to say the crowd #1 favorite was the 'Fried Chicken Pot Pie' which is found right in front of the old mill inn. Honestly, the reason why I think this worked so well is that it ISN'T that far from what it is originally. It takes like a handheld extra crisp chicken pot pie. and you get to dab macaroni and cheese, that is similar to the little pastas that are in my infant son's food, in an already rich and moist fried snack. It's a great slight twist on an already great meal.
So this is coming from someone who's never had a cuban roll nor probably knows exactly what's going on inside of it. I LOVED IT. Shredded pork. A good amount of salt. Dustin said it best, "The Cuban was a tasty take on a classic Cuban sandwich. Fried up like an egg roll, it came with a delicious sauce to dip it in." That it did, Dustin. That it did.
Hm. Deep Fried Bacon Burger Dog Sliders on a Stick. A name longer than I prefer to remember. It wasn't anything I'd write home about. Except now. On this blog. It was kind of dry and the best part to me was the pickle on the top to add some moisture and variation of taste. The french fries were aight' at best. Yet an added bonus. Can't knock that.
So here it is. The biggest disappointment of our eating experience was sadly the cookie fries. They were super hyped up to me as being great. Maybe it was the time of day. Maybe... I ... No, they were bad. SUPER dry. Dipping sauce was gross. I could maybe see giving it to a child and they'd be about it. But IF it was dry but crunchy like a cookie. Or if it was soft and moist on the interior. Maybe we could have something good to say but for frying something so slender and small. It just doesn't hold up in my book as something edible.
So there you have it. My list of must eats and MUST NOTS for the State Fair of Texas 2016. Feel free to tell me what you think. What you agree with? How you hate me for not liking cookie fries? Whatever it is, feel free to share, comment, whatever it is people do with blogs and look forward to my next blog including a tutorial video of how to get Ashley's look at home!
